New Blog on Campus

We instinctively welcome more channels of communication, and we have certainly enjoyed seeing a recent proliferation of blogs on campus.

There is now another: Ryan Alexander’s 1832 blog. 1832, Alexander informs us, is the year Andrew Jackson founded the Democratic Party. Alexander is indeed a Democratic Party activist, but certainly not an ideologue. A very effective staff worker for the Kerry campaign in 2004, he has extensive experience in campus student organizations.

He’s clearly not going to shy away from controversy. His first substantive post calls for the removal of an Office of Student Development staffer, and is headlined “Fire Pam Peters of OSD.”

The OSD bureaucracy is clearly deeply dysfunctional. Among other sins, they are willing to stifle student expression on the basis of half-baked fears that somebody somewhere might be offended. They do this even when the predictable result is a firestorm of negative publicity.

It’s long past due that they be held accountable in a serious way. The negative publicity that the University got because of the closure of the College Republicans’ “Adopt a Sniper” fundraiser was a start, and Alexander’s blog is a big further step.
