Marquette’s Gender and Sexuality Resource Center: Glorifying a Black Militant Cop Killer

Marquette’s Gender and Sexuality Resource Center was set up as a sop to the campus gay lobby in the wake of Marquette’s refusal to hire aggressively lesbian Arts & Sciences dean candidate Jodi O’Brien. Not surprisingly, it has consistently pursued a leftist secular agenda including, for example, the Femsex Seminar, which was so raunchy and so opposed to Marquette’s supposed “Catholic mission” that the Administration ordered that sponsorship be withdrawn.

But now we have yet another case of the extreme leftist agenda of the organization. An entry from its Facebook page:

Yes, it’s a mural, in the offices of the Center, celebrating one Assata Shakur.

(Here is a larger view of the image.)

So who is Assata Shakur? A black militant who was convicted of murder and fled to Cuba, where she is still protected by the Communist government. According to Wikipedia:
Assata Olugbala Shakur (born JoAnne Deborah Byron on July 16, 1947[1]), whose married name was Chesimard,[2][3] is an African-American activist and member of the former Black Panther Party (BPP) and Black Liberation Army (BLA). Between 1971 and 1973, Shakur was accused of several crimes and was the subject of a multistate manhunt.[4][5]

In May 1973, Shakur was involved in a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike, in which she was accused of killing New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster and grievously assaulting Trooper James Harper.[6] BLA member Zayd Malik Shakur was also killed in the incident, and Shakur was wounded.[6] Between 1973 and 1977, Shakur was indicted in relation to six other incidents—charged with murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, bank robbery, and kidnapping—resulting in three acquittals and three dismissals. In 1977, she was convicted of the first-degree murder of Foerster and of seven other felonies related to the shootout.[7]

Shakur was incarcerated in several prisons in the 1970s. She escaped from prison in 1979 and fled to Cuba in 1984 after living as a fugitive for a few years, and received political asylum. She has been living in Cuba ever since. Since May 2, 2005, the FBI has classified her as a domestic terrorist and offered a $1 million reward for assistance in her capture. On May 2, 2013, the FBI added her to the Most Wanted Terrorist List; the first woman to be listed.[8] On the same day, the New Jersey Attorney General offered to match the FBI reward, increasing the total reward for her capture to $2 million.[9]
More information on her can be found here.

Yes, this is the sort of person the “sexuality” bureaucrats at Marquette feel deserves to be honored.

[Update]

With a hat tip to Charlie Syles (who Tweeted this), the wanted poster for Shakur.

  1. "Thank you to the Alpha Kappa Alpha's for initiating the mural"

You might wonder why a fraternal organization would sponsor a mural honoring a murderous savage, but their Wikipedia entry makes all clear:
"Alpha Kappa Alpha (ΑΚΑ) is the first Greek-lettered sorority established and incorporated by African-American college women."

  2. There is no problem here, Marquette is not a Catholic Institution ipso facto. Why waste the time, the public doesn't recognize it as Catholic, it doesn't promote the Catholic Faith, only sexual deviants and misguided Vatican II supporters will have anything to do with Marquette. NO ONE CARES

  3. I'm wondering how the philosophy of Assata Shakur fka.JoAnne Deborah Chesimard has cvhanged after living in what she advocated for.

No one gave Fidel Castro the education to overthrow Cuba. His theory was incomplete without practice at the time of the overthrow. He promised to distribute the wealth for the benefit of all Cubans. The intent may have started sincere but lets not mistake the will for the deed.

Joanne Chesimard is now living with the people who make roughly $20 per month while Castro sits on almost $1 billion in personal wealth. The same profile occurs across nearly every nation which has bought into socialist utopia theory.

In fact there is no period of time in the history of the world in which the standard of living for the ordinary man improved more than early 20th century US. If anyone was truely for the improvement of the poor, they would use this time period and its policies as the benchmark.

The mural mentions nothing promoting cop killing. It depicts someone who happened to be a cop killer with a quote about being educated. This depiction is not a tacit approval of everything this person has done in their life.

So would it be accurate to say (by your own standards) that teaching about Columbus in history class is a tacit approval of rape, genocide, and child sex trafficking? We still learn about him though... Hmm...

  5. Duerstisms,

The mural promotes a cop killer and promotes overthrowing the government. Being that Shakur used deadly force in her attempt to overthrow the government, you might be a little concerned.

However, I see from your blog that you are anti-Capitalist / anti-"consumerist" so such things don't disturb you as much as they should...

  6. It would be interesting to analyze the DNA or evidence of a cop killer from the early 1970's. Technology may prove the truth is different from the legend.

While I believe one incident doesn't define an individual, Accountability is important.

However, today, we are seeing many individuals lose their entire fortune, job, or credibility over one Tweet, Facebook, or email. It begs the question: Are we such a forgiving society?

Holding a grudge, punitive damages, willful dilution of the legal system in America is becoming commonplace. Things like respect, integrity, honesty cannot be technologically enforced.

Perhaps, media is being given too much access, power, and distribution without its own accountability.

  7. Mr. Hendricks:

Actually, Fidel Castro and his brother Raúl did receive a proto-fascist education at Cuba's elite Belén Preparatory School, run by the Jesuits in Cuba.

Castro was taught by refugees from Spain's Civil War (1936-39), who supported Franco and were of a decidedly fascist vent (one can't really blame them since the so-called Spanish "Republicans" murdered over 3000 priests and nuns during their reign of terror).

Castro's hero then was not Marx, but Mussolini. His schoolmates report that he always carried a copy of Il Duce's Complete Works and that it was his favorite reading material.

When Castro came of age, Mussolini was no longer the hero of the progressive left, as he had been in the 20s and 30s. He then found another idol in Stalin. Even after Khrushchev denounced Stalin, Castro continued to defend him and still does so to this day (see here.

The first thing that Castro did when he came to power in 1959 was to confiscate all Catholic schools (including his alma mater) and expel all foreign priests and nuns (including his former teachers).
