Tolerant Liberals – 103

Calling People You Disagree With “Racist”

From an obscure discussion board, something posted by a Marquette campus liberal activist (you’ll need to scroll down to see it):

I hesitate to write this. I may come back and delete this later. Words are weighty, and especially weighty are the words: sexist, racist, bigot, etc. I know the implications of using these words. But I think it needs to be said: McAdams is a (perhaps closeted) racist, who knows full well the justified problems he'd encounter if he admitted his feelings. Although I cannot prove the above statement (how could I?), I ask you to consider:

In describing the events that the Arab Student Association at Marquette has put together, he comments, “This is the sort of anti-Israel and anti-American bigotry that JUSTICE, MUSG and the Office of Student Development think can provide some worthwhile insight.”

I agree that the month is heavy on Palestinian issues and light on other very important issues. However, nowhere in his comments does he recognize that the major coordinating organization is the Arab Student Association.

I ask: why?
That’s right. The poster is calling us “racist” for taking issue with the anti-American, anti-Israel and indeed pro-terrorism slant of the “Arab Heritage Celebration.” Of course this “celebration” had only a tengential connection to any Arab Heritage.

That is the essence of political correctness in a contemporary university. The politically correct types simply can’t imagine that there could be any legitimate disagreement with their position. Anybody who disagrees is a racist, sexist or homophobe.

Which is why such students and professors are held in contempt by most of the student body, and by most of society at large. But that kind of thing often plays well with faculty and university bureaucrats.
