Some Rumors About the “Warriors” Vote
We’ve checked some reports going around about the Trustees’ vote on the “Warriors” issue (coming up Wednesday, the 4th). A couple appear to be untrue.
There is a widespread belief that changing back to “Warriors” requires not merely a majority vote of the Trustees, but also a majority of the Jesuits on the Board.
In fact, according to Rana Altenburg, Vice President for Public Affairs, only a simple majority of all Board members is needed. Some especially important matters (firing the President, selling off the University) require both a two-thirds majority of the whole board, and a simple majority of Jesuits. But this isn’t one of those situations.
[Update: In spite of what Rana Altenburg clearly told us yesterday, Brigid O’Brien told us this afternoon that, while the rules of the Board don’t require a supermajority in this case, such a supermajority -- with a Jesuit veto -- may in fact be required. It is up to the Chair of the Board of Trustees to decide. Chair John Bergstrom is known to be a supporter of “Warriors,” but may or may not opt for the simple majority decision rule. Fr. Wild has been telling people that the supermajority with a Jesuit veto will be required.
Anybody with an internal campus phone (288 or 244 number) can receive a copy of Rana Altenberg's voice mail -- as reported above -- by merely asking.]
There have also been reports that the Wisconsin Province of the Jesuit order has instructed Jesuit members of the Board to vote against the name change. But Fr. John Paul of the Provincial’s Office insists that there have been no such instructions, nor even any communication that could be construed as such instructions.
It’s generally agreed that the Jesuit members of the Board lean strongly liberal and politically correct, and will vote heavily against the change.
