How Will Public Affairs Spin This?

When Marquette shut down a fund raiser by the College Republicans raising money for American snipers in Afganistan and Iraq, a media firestorm followed. It was a fiasco, in which the school was slammed for its obtuseness. Even the AP and Reuters ran stories that made it clear that the “Adopt a Sniper” program was a legitimate operation, much appreciated by Amercan troops.

When Public Affairs reported Marquette’s media coverage in the regular “News Clips” e-mails sent to the University community, they did an heroic job of sanitizing the coverage.

So now we have another fiasco on our hands. While it hasn’t gotten the national coverage that the sniper incident did, the local media, student reaction and alumni reaction have been brutal.

No “News Clips” e-mails have been forthcoming since this story broke Wednesday evening. That’s understandable, but it’s going to be interesting to see what the next one looks like.
